Thomas Hyde
Thomas
Hyde was born in London in 1978 and educated there and at Oxford University,
where he read music. Having studied privately with David Matthews
while at school he then undertook postgraduate studies at the Royal
Academy of Music, London, with Simon Bainbridge where he gained the
M. Mus degree with distinction in 2001 and was appointed the RAM’s
Manson Junior Fellow in Composition for the subsequent academic year.
In 1996 he attended Sir Peter Maxwell Davies’ Hoy Summer School
and in 2000 was awarded a scholarship to the Dartington International
Summer School to work with Sir Harrison Birtwistle. In 2003 he returned
to Oxford to begin doctoral composition studies at Christ Church with
Robert Saxton and in 2004 was awarded a Harold Hyatt Wingate Scholarship
to complete his doctorate. Thomas Hyde’s music has been featured
at the City of London, Deal, Presteigne and Spitalfields festivals.
Recent works have included an anthem commissioned by St. Paul’s
Cathedral; a scena for solo female voice, Shouts for Herodias, which
has been heard in London, New York and Vancouver; a viola concerto,
written for Edward Vanderspar (principal viola, London Symphony Orchestra)
commissioned by the Little Missenden Festival; and a work for the
Rautio Piano Trio. Thomas Hyde is also a writer on music, most recently
contributing to the Musical Times. Current projects include a music-theatre
piece and a commission for the 2006 Presteigne Festival. Thomas Hyde
is also active as a writer on music most recently contributing to
The Musical Times.
Lucis
Creator (2005) was performed during the 2006
AFNOM festival in London.
