Thomas
McLelland-Young attended Trinity College of Music, studying composition
with Arnold Cooke. While there he won an organ scholarship with John
Webster. He has also won two major composition prizes; the City of
Trieste Prize for Symphonic Composition with his Viola Concerto, and
the Richmond Arts Council Prize with his String Quartet. Commissions
include works for the London 20 Chamber Orchestra, the Essex Symphony
Orchestra, a ballet for the Royal Ballet School students with choreography

Church, Streatham, and anthem to celebrate the 750th Anniversary of
All Saints’ Church, Warlingham, and a work for the Commissioned
Composition Prize at the Croydon Music Festival. He worked as director
of music at St. Leonard’s Church, Streatham, for many years
and during his time there formed his own group, The McLelland-Young
Singers and Players, introducing many contemporary works to Streatham
audiences. In 1998 they gave the first performance of his Twelve Japanese
Haiku (set in the original Japanese) with Angela Henckel as soloist
and sponsorship from the Sasakaena Foundation. Thomas was musical
director of the Sutton Symphony Orchestra for ten years, who gave
the first performance of his Yorkshire Meditations and The Sun Has
Set under his direction. He is currently Director of Music at All
Saints’ Church, Warlingham, and until recently was Director
of Music Studies for the teacher’s Course at the Royal Ballet
School. He also teaches and lectures. Some of his music has been published
by Novello and Kevin Mayhew.
