Jan Mikael Vainio
Jan
Mikael Vainio studied composition, musicology and orchestration at
the Helsinki University and the Sibelius Academy (1993-2003) where
his teachers included Harri Vuori and Olli Kortekangas. Vainio has
also participated in master-classes by Brian Ferneyhough, Alexander
Müllenbach, Sven-David Sandström, Jouni Kaipainen and Magnus
Lindberg. In 2003 Vainio graduated as a Master of Arts from the Helsinki
University. His works have been performed at concerts and festivals
both nationally and internationally, and on the Finnish Broadcasting
Company (YLE, Radio 1). His works have been performed by Norrköping
Symphony Orchestra, St Michel City Orchestra, UMO Jazz Orchestra,
Sibelius Academy Orchestra, Oulu Festivo Orchestra, Academic Wind
Orchestra, Uusinta Ensemble, Aito String Orchestra, Kamus String Quartet,
Nordlys Enselmble, Kampin Laulu and Cantus Amici among others. Jan
Mikael Vainio’s inspiration often comes from extra-musical things.
He has often sited scientific and cosmological issues in particular
as such sources, but also architecture, visual arts, literature, or
even individual words or phrases. In the case of many of his works
the title has existed first and informed the composition process.
However, Vainio stresses that writing programme music is not his foremost
intention.
Intrada
(2005) and Litanie
(2002) were performed during the 2006 AFNOM
festival in London.
