Willem van Twillert

Willem van Twillert - photoWillem van Twillert studied at the Sweelinck Conservatory in Amsterdam with Piet Kee (organ) and Willem Brons (piano). In 1976 he obtained the diploma for Church Music and in 1978 the diploma for Performing Musician “cum laude”, with the teaching-endorsement for improvisation. A scholarship gave him the opportunity to specialise in early music with Gustav Leonhardt (organ), Anneke Uittenbosch (harpsichord) and Klaas Bolt (style-improvisation). Courses with Daniel Roth, Ewald Kooiman, (Literature) and Hans Haselböck, Zsigmond Szathmáry and Peter Planyavsky (for improvisation) have enriched his organ playing. Willem van Twillert has written numerous Psalm and Chorale-based compositions which have been printed in the Netherlands and issued on CD, his Toccata “Praised be the Father in romantic style” has been published in Germany by J. Butz, and his Toccata à la Chaconne (featured in the exhibition-concert on 7th October) won both second prize and the audience prize at the Hinsz Composition Competion at the Bovenkerk (Kampen) in 2005. Willem has become a well-known musician at home and abroad through his many concert performances in the Netherlands, Germany, Italy and America, and through a series of CD’s he recorded featuring rarely performed organ music. He has also edited for various Dutch music publishers (most notably a fifteen-volume series entitled Organist Composers of the 18th and 19th Centuries) and he is one of the editors for the monthly journal, de Orgelvriend (the Organfriend). As a church organist, he has accompanied the services of three cooperating churches in Amersfoort since 1979. From 1976 until 2003 Willem van Twillert was the director of a private music school in Bunschoten, and between 1980 and 1988 he taught organ at the Municipal Academy of Music in Zwolle. In 2004 he gave master-classes at the Music Academy of Sarajevo (Bosnia). He has produced and broadcast several radio programmes, including The Historical Organ in Holland (1999) and Dutch Organs (2004).

Toccata a la Chaconne (2005) was performed during the 2006 AFNOM festival in London.
