| Ian Coleman read his biography
Canzona (2006) Canzona is Ian Coleman’s only completed organ work to date. It was first sketched out while he was still studying, and lay fallow for a number of years. In it, he takes as his model the Baroque form of the Canzona, which starts with a contrapuntal section in simple time, and then continues with one or two further sections treating the same melodic material in compound time. The relations of metre and rhythm are more convoluted in this particular Canzona, but the shift from a more staid, massive musical architecture to something more florid and virtuosic are maintained, within a harmonic language that remains tonal, if a good deal more free than would be encountered in the Baroque style.
