Toccata à la Chaconna (2005)

The theme of the Toccata a la Chaconne is loosely inspired by a number of characteristic intervals (most notably minor thirds and seconds) from the melody of a Hungarian folk song. The frustrating, transient, humdrum elements of life, as well as its pleasant, comforting reality, is reflected, among other things, by the juxtaposition of tonality (chromatic, tonal chords and key-affirming intervals) and atonal elements. Contrast, drive, and charm are among the most important elements of this Toccata, just as they can be considered among the most important elements of human existence. As well as variations with an unusually high tempo, there are also calm, introverted variations (or fragments of variations). In the general upbeats (just before the theme re-appears) it is the intention to develop the musical tension as much as possible. During the Toccata there are a number of moments which cannot be notated. These moments are filled with so-called ‘Cadenzi Improvisata’ which are sometimes written out, and sometimes only suggested. The jury of the Hinsz Composition Competition wrote the following regarding the Toccata a la Chaconne: “The Toccata a la chaconne is a substantial work featuring on the one hand drive and an unmistakable rhythm, but on the other hand surprising the listener through its improvisational sections. The form is clear; the material presented in the first section, and its development, return at particular points in the composition, lending the composition as a whole, structure. The Toccata works very well on historic organs such as that in the Bovenkerk; the dynamics of the old winding system give the work a beautiful breathing quality, while the registrational possibilities offered by old organs can be demonstrated with this composition in an extrovert manner. Especially imposing is the theme played with double pedal: this writing forms a strong basis for the piece. The writing of accessible music creates its own challenges, and van Twillert makes clear that he is aware of these problems. We hope to hear more of this composer, especially as he demonstrates that historic organs and new music can go so well together!”
