Thomas McLelland-Young - photoThomas McLelland-Young attended Trinity College of Music, studying composition with Arnold Cooke. While there he won an organ scholarship with John Webster. He has also won two major composition prizes; the City of Trieste Prize for Symphonic Composition with his Viola Concerto, and the Richmond Arts Council Prize with his String Quartet. Commissions include works for the London 20 Chamber Orchestra, the Essex Symphony Orchestra, a ballet for the Royal Ballet School students with choreography by Ross McKim, a setting of the Easter Acclamations for St. Leonard’s Church, Streatham, and anthem to celebrate the 750th Anniversary of All Saints’ Church, Warlingham, and a work for the Commissioned Composition Prize at the Croydon Music Festival. He worked as director of music at St. Leonard’s Church, Streatham, for many years and during his time there formed his own group, The McLelland-Young Singers and Players, introducing many contemporary works to Streatham audiences. In 1998 they gave the first performance of his Twelve Japanese Haiku (set in the original Japanese) with Angela Henckel as soloist and sponsorship from the Sasakaena Foundation. Thomas was musical director of the Sutton Symphony Orchestra for ten years, who gave the first performance of his Yorkshire Meditations and The Sun Has Set under his direction. He is currently Director of Music at All Saints’ Church, Warlingham, and until recently was Director of Music Studies for the teacher’s Course at the Royal Ballet School. He also teaches and lectures. Some of his music has been published by Novello and Kevin Mayhew.

Slains Castle (2007) was premièred during the 2007 AFNOM festival in London.
