| Richard Beaudoin read his biography Virga Jesse Floruit (2005) The single-movement elegy ‘Virga Jesse floruit’ is a contrapuntal piece whose voices gradually become detached from one another in time and character. It takes its title from a motet by Anton Bruckner. The piece was premièred by Christian Wilson in May 2005 at Oxford University’s Christ Church Cathedral. Duration: 6mins Each of the ‘Five Counterpoints’ is a miniature chorale prelude whose cantus – always played by the pedals – is taken from a religious work. The first borrows a line from Szymanowski’s ‘Stabat Mater’ (1926); the second from Rossini’s ‘Petite Messe Solennelle’ (1864); the third from Stravinsky’s ‘Requiem Canticles’ (1965); the fourth from Janácek’s ‘Otcenás’ (1901); the fifth from Finnissy’s ‘Liturgy of St. Paul’ (1995). The work is dedicated to Christian Wilson, who premièred it in May 2005 at Oxford University’s Christ Church Cathedral. Duration: 5mins The Pavane d’Isabelle comes from Act II of the opera-in-progress, PIERRE, based on Herman Melville’s 1852 novel. During the opera’s second act, Pierre sits with his half-sister Isabelle, who recounts to him her troubled life. At a certain point, she becomes overwhelmed with grief, takes up her guitar, and plays a long interlude that includes this pavane. The first act of the opera was staged at London’s Arcola Theatre in August 2007, directed by Andrew Steggall. This transcription for organ was made especially for the Annual Festival of New Organ Music’s ‘New for Old Commission’ and was premièred at St Dominic's Priory on 27th October 2007 by Ourania Gassiou.
