Cheatham read his biography Fanfare & Toccata (2000) The aim of writing Fanfare & Toccata was to compose an opus in the tradition of the great preludes and toccatas of Johann Sebastian Bach. "Way over in Beulah land," a Negro spiritual, and "Just over in the glory land," an American folk hymn, were used as thematic material. Fanfare & Toccata was recorded in 2000 by Lucius Weathersby for Albany Records on the 1864 "Father" Willis organ at St. Michael and All Saints Church in Great Torrington, Devon.
