Tonoi V (2004)

Tonoi V is the fifth in a series of works for solo performer. The piece is abstract in nature, having no particular idea or ‘programme’ attached to it. Although presented in one continuous movement, the work is divided into clear sections.
It is typical of the previous works in the series in that the harmonic and melodic material presented at the beginning is used and developed throughout. During the course of writing these solo works, I have explored other techniques common to all. Each of the works in the series thus far is episodic in nature. Each section of the respective works moves further away from the original statement. Succeeding sections may seem to have been arrived at in a logical manner, however, they move the listener further and further away from the opening motivic and/or harmonic environment originally presented. The challenge that I set up for myself is to figure out a way to return the opening material no matter how far I have wandered. In all of the Tonoi works, I am also interested in writing as idiomatically as possible for the respective solo instrument.
