| John Swindells read his biography Sonatina (2007) This piece was written in May 2007 with the AFNOM in mind, the intention being of producing a condensed work with the feeling of a more large-scale sonata. The influence of Vierne and Cochereau are apparent but set in the context of a more English tradition. The central part of the piece, the Adagio, is framed by two allegro sections. The two allegros share the same main theme, somewhat disguised by the differing textures of these sections. The beginning and ending of the piece are slow, but while the introduction has a brooding atmosphere, the coda is restful and the piece ends very quietly. Most of the tonal resources of the organ are used, in a conventional manner of the romantic/symphonic tradition and for the player the challenge is to approach the work as such. It was also the intention for the piece to have an improvised feeling to it, allowing the performer to seek out spontaneity in his/her performance. Duration: 10mins
