Taylor read his biography Angel (2004) Angel was written originally for piano in December 1987 for Claire Wilson a friend of the composer. It later became the seventh piece of 'Nativity' a set of seasonal pieces for piano solo which received a private performance by the composer in December 1998. This version of the piece for organ was made in September 2004 and received its first performance on 6th October 2007 by Hannah Parry during the Second AFNOM Festival in London. The composer is considering making similar settings of the other eleven companion pieces. Duration: 3mins
Eleanor's Lullaby (1975 arr 2004) Eleanor's Lullaby is one of the composer's earliest piano compositions written for a friend Pauline Thompson to play on the birth of her second daughter Eleanor in May 1975 and first performed by Pauline in November that year at the North Bucks Music Centre in Bletchley. The music's medieval inflexions also hint at the story of Queen Eleanor the wife of King Edward I. His first marriage to Eleanor was happy, and when she died in 1290 he erected beautiful memorial crosses wherever the bier rested on its journey from Nottingham to London, one of which stood in the composer birth town of Stony Stratford. This version of the piece for organ was made in September 2004 and received its first performance on 6th October 2007 by James Norrey during the Second AFNOM Festival in London. Duration: 3mins
Dreamscape has as its backdrop the inspiration of Shakespeare’s play, ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ and the lines, “Ill met by moonlight, proud Titania”. It begins with an otherworldly music of disquiet for the proud Titania and the jealous Oberon, conveying the darker side of the drama within the evocative atmosphere of moonlight and woodland shadows, and the deep and rich undergrowth of a labyrinthine wood. Into this world of dreams come the confused lovers on a nightmare journey, encountering Puck, the architect of mismanagement and bewildering contradictions. The music finally resolves with the gentle blessing of the fairies on the household of King Theseus. An earlier version of the work was written for spinet in 1987, this is a re-composition for organ made in 2004. The choice of scoring or registration is left to the discretion of the organist, bearing in mind the changes of tempo and character of the music and so as to suit the nature of the organ. The first performance of the work was given by David Goode as part of a collaborative concert organised by SPNM and St Botolph’s Organ Project in St Botolph’s church, Aldgate on 1st December 2004.
